EDIT: It seems that I just can't catch a break these days. Beware of the lava part, it creates massive slow-down. You should just watch this in Medium or Low quality unless you have a powerful computer.

I hope it shows.

Well, what can I say, I JUST missed Sonic's 20th anniversary, not to mention I totally botched the countdown to the release date. And boy am I hating myself for that. I hope that this animation makes up for at least one of those.

Tell me what you think about the animation in the comment section below, and go on and give me a critique if you feel like it.

Happy 20th Anniversary Sonic!

First time writing a critique, so just bear with me. ^^;

That was absolutely amazing. I was completely hooked on it from the beginning. I'm amazed at how well you can use Adobe Flash CS4. :)

I would say that every piece of this was exciting. I didn't know what was happening next, and every punch, and every kick was thrilling.

My favorite part of this whole piece would be the flashback scene. It really makes the viewer remember Sonic 3. When I saw the flashback, I instantly thought of me and my brother playing Sonic 3. He would play as Sonic, and I would play as Tails. Our favorite scene was fighting Knuckles.

I'm sure other viewers have amazing memories, and thanks to this, I know they are thinking of those memories.

This truly is a wonderful piece, and I can't wait for part 2 :)

Well I remember seeing the preview for this a while back and from the looks of it, it appeared to be something to watch for. Needless to say, the wait was totally worth it. Although I don’t normally critique animations I liked this one too much to pass up, especially since I got to watch it multiple times to get as many details as possible.

* * *

STORYLINE: The story/plot of the animation follows the pretty much classic "Sonic vs. Knuckles" but this story is handled very well in this piece. It opens up very quickly but the timing offers a moment for the idea behind the story to sink in before diving into the action. All throughout the piece there were moments of suspense and great moments of humor. It certainly ends on a cliffhanger but it is ended well and left it wide open for Part 2.

PICTURE: The frames offer a nice variety of close-up shots and wide frame shots of the fighting. The close ups provide some nice views of the character’s facial expressions, adding to the piece. The coloring overall it is presented very well in the piece. The lineart looks fantastic as well. The effort put into the backdrops is just fantastic. Nothing is lacking there.

SOUND: Sound effects were absent but it was appropriate for the piece. Music was well-chosen although there were some places where the fighting could have been better timed but for most of the piece, the beat fit in well with what was going on visually.

FLOW: The flow is very nice. There are, as some mentioned, a slight lag in the volcano scene for a few frames but other than that there is nice, consistent, well-paced flow throughout the entire animation.

CHARACTERS: Characters are well-animated, well-drawn and well presented. They are put into a nice style and show some slight shading, which adds a great touch. Their facial expressions and their posing overall are diverse and intricate, offering some nice variety although there are a couple recycled expressions. As someone else mentioned, it would’ve been nice to see Knuckles’ face cave in when Sonic stepped on it but overall, the characters are very well done.

POSSIBLE MEANS OF IMPROVEMENT: Nothing that hasn’t already been mentioned in the above sections. It might be my computer but the replay button doesn’t work for me (I had to refresh to watch it again).

OVERALL IMPACT: Very impressive, even with the slight issues but considering the amount of time and effort (and the amount of hamburgers) spent in making this: it came together very very well. A very engaging piece. Excellent pace, good action, visually pleasing and put together well. Excellent work!

Funny story, the Lava Reef and Hidden Palace Zones are my favorite parts of animation because I think it has the best scenes of combat flow. Like when they're fighting down the lavafall and fighting in the background scenery. The momentum of their hits just flow together so well. ^^
